I just recently bought a new Dell Optiplex GX520 which I am waiting to arrive at my place in a couple of days. I know that this computer is more of a business machine but I was curious to know if it would run the following games of Civilization IV era:
- Civilization IV
- Civilization IV: Warlords (expansion pack)
- Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (expansion pack)
- Civilization IV: Colonization
These are the specifications of the machine:
CPU - Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
Memory (RAM) - 2GB DDR2
Hard Drive - 80GB SATA II
Sound - Onboard
Video - Onboard Intel GMA 950 with 224MB shared memory
LAN - Gigabit Ethernet LAN
Optical Drive - DVD-RW (DVD Burner)
Power Supply - 220 Watts
Operating System - Windows XP Pro SP3
The system requirements for a basic Civilization IV game with the two expansions are as follows:
Windows 2000/XP/Vista
1.2 GHz Processor
256 MB RAM
1.7 GB free space
4x DVD Drive
DirectX 9.0c 鈥揷ompatible 64 MB video card with hardware T%26amp;L %26amp; pixel shader
DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
But on the other hand, Civilization IV: Colonization requires a tad more Memory with specifications as follows:
OS: Windows 2000/XP/Vista
RAM: 512 MB
CPU: 1.2 GHz (1.8 GHz for full)
Disc drive:4x CD-ROM drive
HDD: 900 MB free disk space
Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB (128 MB for full) video card with Shader 1.1 support
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible
I have looked at these various System requirements and almost all suit the computer but one, the computer's video card. As I said earlier, it comes with Intel GMA 950 on-board graphics with shared memory of 224MB. Here's a link to this at Intel's website:

Anyway, all I am asking if someone knowledgeable with computers could do a little research on this video card and whether it will or won't play Civilization IV, it's expansion packs and Colonization. Will Civilization IV run on this computer?
Based on the technical specifications of the onboard Video for the Intel GMA950, there shouldn't be any problems with the games, however you may have to turn down some of the graphic settings.
If you have some extra cash, you may want to consider buying a Video Card which would give you better performance for some games. Will Civilization IV run on this computer?
All onboard video chips currently available on the market have T%26amp;L, as well as Shader 1.1 support, so don't worry - your machine is more than capable to run Civ 4. Great game series, by the way! ;)Will Civilization IV run on this computer?
it will be more than enough. civilization is the most under spec friendly type of game to begin with and your system should be able to run it really well.
To be sure, just get a decent graphics card...NVIDIA or ATI...
